Wrong Fuel in Car Old Town - Petrol in Diesel Car Old Town

It was about 6 pm on a Friday and though we were guaranteed a dry day, it hadn't ceased pouring! Mark and I were sitting commenting on the weekend's sports, prepared for the 8th fuel drain that day to arrive. Eventually we got a call from a girl on a business expedition who had gone to the Shell petrol garage and filled the wrong fuel in her diesel Old Town hire car. The poor lady was very distressed by the sounds of it, telling me "I simply cannot believe that I have destroyed the car! I am just so accustomed to putting petrol in my petrol car I totally forgot that I was operating a diesel!" We instructed her to calm down and not to fret, also that these things unfortunately often happen. She had managed to relocate the car to a safe spot and, since it was no more than a short distance off from where we were, we were able to find the woman swiftly. The incorrect fuel was extracted so she could get back to the hotel she was lodging in. Despite the fact that we got very drenched, it was all rewarding seeing her drive home calm and much less apprehensive. A fuel drain well done in my opinion!

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
